Burning Monk
This picture seems old to me because it is in black and white and not only that but also the texture seems rough. By looking at the background as the other public people just stand there without running to aid him it seems that he is just being puninshed or something. Also, by looking at the way that the fire is burning it looks as though someone turnned him on fire as appose to him burning himself. I also notice that there is no swing motion smere on the picture to show as if he is in pain and trying to get out of the fire it's as if he is just sitting there letting himself get burned.
The impression that it leaves me with is that it is sad for people or civil to just stand there and watch this kind of thing happen. I don't even think I can call them civil because civil would be civilized people and I don't think that, that is a civilized thing to do even if it was for punishment.
After reading the article my persepective does change because now I know that he acutally burned himself for a religious cause. He was not being punished, he was declaring the same religious rights as catholics to be able to practice their beliefs as any other religion would. He was asking to lift the ban from being able to pull out their buddhist flag and practice as they normally would. Basically, he was requesting the same rights as any other religion would normally do.
So, what I got from the quotes that other people left is that everybody is different. No matter what people say they are going to have their own opinion about everything. To be honest their opinion does not change with my impression that I have about the picture. Some are good remarks and some are bad, and some are just plain stupid, forgive my English, but I still think this man is strong in his beliefs and it is just plain sad that he had to put himself in a position like this to get the governments attention.
My question to you is How else can people get the government's attention without sacrificing their own life?
